What Is Tech For Good?

Share

In order to define what tech for good is, one most define what "Good" is.

According to the wikipedia:

In most contexts, the concept of good denotes the conduct that should be preferred when posed with a choice between possible actions. Good is generally considered to be the opposite of evil.

So if good is the opposite of evil, what's evil?

Evil, as a concept, is usually defined as profoundly immoral behavior, and it is related to acts that cause unnecessary pain and suffering to others.

It's adorable to think that in tech what's good and what's bad can be binary.

I remember as a child thinking how "good" it would be for an AI to determine all of humanities decisions, what better world that digital dictatorship ruled by applied statistics? And now the word "AI" is a onomatopoeia for the devil.

I'm sure I would have a better answer if I had gotten to college, we engineers need a lot of ethics. In the words of my artist "You need to stop thinking about whats good and start doing good girl!", in the words of my tormented mind, how can I do good if I do not know what "Good" is?

Aristotle asserts that there is one highest goodeudaimonia (traditionally translated as "happiness" or "flourishing")—which is what good politics should target, because what is best for an individual is less beautiful (kalos) and divine (theios) than what is good for a people (ethnos) or community (polis). Politics organizes communal practical life, so the proper aim of politics should include the proper aim of all other pursuits, and "this end would be the human good (tanthrōpinon agathon)". The human good is a practical target, in contrast to Plato's references to "the Good itself". Aristotle concludes that ethics ("our investigation" or methodos) is "in a certain way political"

This view however, it's to unwoke for me, coming from a white elite tutor to Alexander the Great, I dare to ask, what ever happened to ecology? well according to The_Ethical_Experience_of_Nature_Aristotle_and_the_Roots_of_Ecological_Phenomenology, Aristotle did talked about ecology, which gives me a great transition to my next point:

The position of ecological phenomenology and deep ecology resonates with the views of Aristotle,(...) Generally speaking, ecological phenomenology and deep ecology sees the well being and flourishing of all life on earth as a universal good; (...) Finally, it calls for the introduction of new policies that take this natural ethos into account within the spheres of human social, economic, philosophical and scientific discourse. Indeed, this position asks us to “see” the world in a way that is both new and primordial at the same time. It asks us to distinguish human artifice and assumptions from natural purpose so that, finally, we might rediscover our own relationship with the natural world and come to see ourselves not as the center of creation or “in-nature,” but rather as an enmeshed part of Being as such.

Now, I accept this view because I'm totally biased and fits great with what I'm trying to do, so for now own we can then define that when I use the words "Good" I'm referring to the well being and flourishing of all life on earth.

Is there then, any ecological phenomena's we can see? and what does tech has to do with politics either way?

Tech for good, therefore, is technology oriented to the flourishing of all life on earth.

Then what is technology? going back to the Wikipedia:

Technology is the application of conceptual knowledge to achieve practical goals, especially in a reproducible way. The word technology can also mean the products resulting from such efforts, including both tangible tools such as utensils or machines, and intangible ones such as software.

And again, great for me since my mom fucks with tangible tools such as machines, and I fuck with intangible ones, such as software.

But how does one goes into the "Tech for good" industry? I mean the "Tech for evil", only as a opposite of good, of course, it's very easy to get into. Sure, they all have some sort of cute reason why they are doing things, maybe they are reinventing the wheel for 800 time and that will be good because reasons.

if you google the industrial revolution and it's consequences in DuckDuckGo, the search assistance stablish that:

The Industrial Revolution led to a transition from agrarian economies to industrialized ones, significantly increasing production efficiency and living standards. However, it also resulted in environmental degradation and the rise of child labor.

Wow, what a big no bueno moment. It appears that tech so far hasn't help us transcend into an age of glory.
